So it is the time of the month for your darling again.
Seeing her writhing in pain and getting cranky just pains your heart as much. You want to help her to ease her pain so much but doesn't know what to do to help soothe her pain.
As a girl, I can tell you that a girl would appreciate a lot when her guy shows her the extra care and tenderness.
So, here are some helps that you can try.
First thing first,
What are period cramps and what causes it?
Lots of girls experiences period cramps before or during their periods.
Period cramps are pains in the abdominal (belly) and pelvic area. Sometimes aches can be experienced in the lower back and the upper thighs. These aches are pretty much different from muscles aches and much more painful. It may be accompanied with headaches / nauseous, constipation / diarrhoea.
Period cramps can range from mild to quite severe. Mild cramps may be barely noticeable and of short duration (sometimes felt just as a sense of light heaviness in the belly). Severe cramps can be so painful that they interfere with a woman's regular daily activities.
Yes, it feels like there are continuous stabbings in the belly.
Period cramps are caused by uterine contractions in response to a chemical called Prostagladins. These contractions help to push blood (old endometrial tissues) out via the cervix. The cramping sensation is intensified when clots or pieces of bloody tissue from the lining of the uterus pass through the cervix, especially if the cervical canal is narrow. The severity of period cramps are also response to the level of Prostagladins.
What can you do to help her?
1. Apply heat
Apply hot water bottles or heating pads on aching areas to relax tense muscles and relieve cramping. If you have neither hot water bottles nor heating pads, you can soak a nicely-fold small towel in lukewarm water and place it on aching areas. Be careful not to burn yourself and her.
2. A warm bath or shower can also reduce or ease period cramps.
Allow her to stay in the bathroom as long as she needs to allow the warm water to do it's magic.
3. Mild Exercise
It can sometimes cut the pain. Encourage or bring her for a walk around the neighborhood. Stretching and yoga can also help ease period pains.
4. Go Easy On Her
Period pains can at times become severe and she may need time alone in her room, or time to relax in front of the television while waiting for the pain to subside. A hot cup of herbal tea, or a cozy blanket, may help her get past her pain a little faster.
5. Offer Her Herbal Teas
Herbal teas such as Chamomile, Mint, Raspberry and Blackberry may help sooth tense muscles and anxious moods.
6. Drink Plenty of Water
This will also help with headaches or migraines brought on by menstruation. Also adding lemon juice can decrease bloating. By keeping her well-hydrated, her liver functions better, keeping her hormones (like estrogen) balanced.
7. Encourage Her To Empty Her Bladder As Soon As She Has The Urge To Urinate
Yes, I know this sounds weird.
8. Avoid Salty Foods and Alcohol, Foods Like Dairy and Caffeine
Salty foods and alcohol can retain water increasing bloating, and so make you feel generally sluggish as well as making the cramps worse.
Foods like dairy and caffeine(found in colas and coffees), generally cause problems for menstruating girls. Many find these increase period pains.
9. Nothing Beats A Big Warm Hug From Her Loved One
At times, she may be woken up from sleep due to the immense pain she is experiencing. What you can do is to hug her or allow her to sleep on your chest, while you gently message her aching tummy.
10. Offer Your Help To Get Her Painkiller
You can get this painkiller over the counters at any convenience store and you cant go wrong on it. It is prominent as it's packaging is pink in colour.
However, I do not encourage her to pop one each time she feels pain. Instead, encourage her to bear with the pain and manage with it till it is unbearable or when she has something urgent to attend to.
The reason is over time, her body is building immunity and get used to the painkillers.
I have a friend who pops a painkiller each time she felt period cramps and this resulted in her getting real painful cramps and popping 5 painkillers is of no use to her anymore. You get my drift.
I share these tips as they work pretty fine with me and helped in coping with my ever annoying cramps. Hope these helps!
SHOW HER YOUR LOVE!
PS. A lil chocolate do helps too
